Newborn photography is an art, completely different from any other kind of photo session I do. I am in 95% control of the session (5% goes to the baby because they call the shots when it comes to cooperation). But once that little peanut is asleep I pose, I design the shot, I do it all. There’s no, “hey can you look to the left” or “just drop your chin down a little” or “relax your fingers just a smidge”. They just sit there all curled up and new and perfect. And I’m really starting to love it.

Yes all you friends and family who said, “as soon as you have a baby you’ll want to photograph babies all the time”, can go ahead and pat yourselves on the back. Newborn sessions get me excited about the little one growing inside me, what he or she will be like, and the 1,000s of newborn shots I will take of him/her. Bill (my husband) is my assistant on all sessions and it’s SO fun to see him interact with the newborns, holding them and talking to them until he can get them asleep. His 6’2″ stature makes them look all the smaller and working with him on these sessions makes my heart warm.

So there you have it, bring on the newborns! I’m ready to take their picture!!

This weekend I did a photo session with Natasha at her dad’s lake house on Lake Livingston. I’m so glad we did the session here. There was great scenery and she looked gorgeous, my job was way easy.

It’s also rare that I get to do a college senior session. Sometimes it’s like there is this void in my client’s photos. We do high school senior portraits and I don’t see them again until they get married. I’m pretty sure this is completely ridiculous. What about when the graduate from college, or get a dog, or buy a house, or heck just for fun?

Anyways that was a total tangent from the subject at hand, which is Natasha and her Lake Front College Senior Session.

All the details are below but I want to share with you my insane excitement about the 2012 seniors. Senior year is like entering a brand new era of life, the apex is graduation day. There is a TON to figure out college applications, decisions, finals, financial aid, living arrangements, goodbyes, prom, and a lot more. I think that’s why I love shooting senior sessions so much, each student is on the brink of a new chapter of life.

So thats all the details! Remember if you book your senior session with a friend (you have to shoot at the same time, but the cool part is you’ll get to do some shots together) you both get a discount on your session fee! And thats about it, pretty simple eh?

Eliana was the perfect newborn, she fell asleep right away and with the help of a space heater and a few gentle bum pats from mom she stayed asleep through the entire session. This is probably my favorite photo from the session, mom and dad are both musically inclined but Mom is a music teacher. The music on the piano is the song Made for You.

Mom and Dad also have a backyard vegetable garden, everything in this photo was home grown.

I so look forward to watching this little munchkin grow up. She is equally as precious as her parents. I’m so glad that I got to capture these moments in their lives.

This year I had the honor of photographing a group of students from Oak Ridge High School a few hours before their prom. These kids were stunning, like knock your socks off stunning. The peacock feather dress (I totally would have worn that to my prom) it was awesome! And they were a lot of fun too, completely willing to do anything like jump in the grass or be totally goofy, pretty much my ideal photo shoot.

I hear a grand time was had by all at the prom. I’m so glad I was able to capture some of these images for them, and it makes me wish I had some of my own prom.

Aaaand she likes to sleep with all her arms and legs out and about.

And thus, upon their return we had their baby shower. Which now that I’ve been to a shower where the baby has already arrived, I much prefer it.

Nicole, Stacy and I prepped for this shower weeks ahead of time. We planned. We toiled. We labored. And here are our fruits!

Ok so I’m really proud of the sweets table! It was truly a team effort and it worked out beautifully!

I had the grand honor of making all the printables. SO awesome! I may post a free template…who knows.

Someone gave her a framed photo of the first time she felt baby Riann move. Mad props for A. Taking the picture and B. Framing it so beautifully.

And Stacy hung a clothes line across all her banisters. When we sent out the invites we also sent a little card encouraging guests to bring an unwrapped onsie. SO FUN! Tons of onsies decorated the banisters. It was grand.

And at the end of the shower the most perfect, baby doll sized little girl came to visit us. I love her. Seriously, she’s perfect.

Congrats Sarah & Jacob!

I was watching old videos from college on YouTube, which lead me to finding an old junior high friend’s YouTube. Even though he was all grown up he still had the same expressions. It was odd and it got me thinking about old times, and how I’m like, for real, an adult.

I miss college. I loved dorm life. I loved college life. I feel like it all went way too fast.

I am happy with this new stage in life, its definitely totally different than any other stage. This adult, married, home ownership stage.

…Enter the rabbit trail…

Somehow, through all this I ended up on one of my favorite blogs The Wedding Chicks. I have to take their blog in doses because the things posted there make me so exorbitantly happy that if I looked at it on a regular basis I very well might explode. There is a richness to everything they post. Every wedding they post makes me want to get married all over again, not because I’d change one thing about my wedding day, but I just want another excuse to throw that awesome/put together/design-ed-ly sound/visually rich party. This one makes my heart melt. Sigh. I want to plan a party.

So this got me to thinking about my own wedding all almost 1.5 years ago. So here’s a couple pictures for you, some of my (and my husband’s) favorite things. (Photography provided by my dear friend Brenda Horan, check her out, she’s fantastic, especially if you have a new baby, whew she’s incredible)

This is Bill’s favorite group shot of the wedding. I’m a big fan as well. You know I think this is the first picture of myself on this blog (if you couldn’t figure it out, I’m the one in the big white dress).

Lady Bug’s Floral on the north side of Tulsa, OK rocks my floral world. She did exactly what I asked for, and cheap too ($250 for everything). I picked out ever flower in this bouquet. The single orange protea is an ode to my missions trip to South Africa (they grow wild there), I left part of my heart in that country.

My one splurge (the whole wedding cost us $5,000, and we paid cash, Dave Ramsey would be so proud), the photobooth, which I had given up on until about 3 days before the wedding. Brenda met Ryan Smart at a camera store a few days before my wedding. Ryan, among other things, rents photo booths. Did I mention he has the best rate in the city? It was my childhood dream to have a photo booth at my wedding (I still want one in my house) and he made that happen.

Yeah, I’m a photographer, of course I had my own personal mini photo shoot in the hotel room. What else would you expect?

Other than the whole marriage thing, the best part of that day was having all my closest friends and family there. And the photo booth. I think there’s about 13 or so people in there.
